The IEEE Nikola Tesla Award
In his autobiography, Tesla wrote: “The progressive development of man is vitally dependent on invention. It is the most important product of his creative brain. Its ultimate purpose is the complete mastery of mind over the material world, the harnessing of the forces of nature to human needs.”
Given that The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) “is the world’s largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity,” it seems fitting that they have an award honouring an Inventor who is so closely aligned with their mission. To that end, in 1975, the IEEE created the Nikola Tesla Award to recognize his contributions to society most notably embodied in his AC Motor that enabled the transmission of electricity across great distances. The award is given out every year to an individual, or team (up to 3), who have demonstrated “impact on technology, inventive value, breadth of use, [and] leadership…” and is awarded annually.
Nobody from Canada has won the Nikola Tesla Award since Paul Dandeno of the University of Toronto won it in 1998 “For contribution to modelling and, application of synchronous machines, power system controls, and stability analysis,” and the 2015 Award went to ION Gheorghe Boldea, from University Politechnica Timisoara, Timisoara, Romania. If you are aware of someone who meets the criteria, you have until January 31st, 2016 to submit for the next award!
